Gender Performativity: Judith Butler.

You may be asked to evaluate Butler's theory for questions on online media or the television industry. However, the theory may also prove useful elsewhere, particularly for magazines.

Gender performance - The notion of performing the characteristics commonly associated with a gender.

Gender performativity - How the world reacts to your performance of gender.

For Butler, gender is not constructed from the moment of birth, but is something that is learned and reinforced through reactions to our gender performativity.

Examples of gender performativity:

• Max bits his lips when he sees Anita.
• Matti says "We all know why you like him crusty sheets".
• Anita iron, reads and cooks and upsets Laura and Laura feels her job has been stolen.
• Matti swears "knob cock" which isn't stereotypically feminine.

• Stares straight ahead doesn't blink which suggests confidence nd his on a mission.

• Leo is casually dressed in green hoodie which has connotations of the military who are confident.  
• The jacket also suggests his an outsider/homeless.     
• Leo point at the stranger which is aggressive and hegemonically masculine.   
• Leo points at Max which suggests his an authoritative figure taking control.
• Leo is anxious when he walks in the brothel which suggests his never been in a brothel before.
• His disgusted.
• Leo is acting as a stereotypical man.
• Niska emphasises her gender by clutching her breasts.
• Leo leaves Niska which isn't stereotypically masculine as he isn't saving the women.
