PEA paragraph- Jungle cruise/ Attitude.
'Explore the ways in which Attitude uses representations of gay men to position the audience'
reference to the ideology of the producer, of visibility, and the role of stereotypes.
Attitude uses the article of Jack Whitehalls homosexual character, in Jungle cruise, to position the audience in an uncomfertable way. The article features a quote saying Jack Whitehall's character will be “hugely effete, very camp and very funny”. This quote cultivates the stereotype that gay men are weak and very dramatic and in doing so anchors the audience to believe this is whats needed to create comedy. However, in the trailer Whitehall's character is barely seen and has no lines suggesting Disney is using him as the token character. Although this stereotype may appeal to potentially straight women for the comedic value the target audience of this magazine is gay men. Homosexual men that don't confrom to the stereotype being cultivated will be positioned uncomfortably due to the hyperreal representation of gay men being conveyed. These men will feel missrepresentated and most likely offended that Disney is using Whitehalls character to generate audince appeal yet not to gay audiences appeal, for comedic value as well as to defete opinions that Diseny is homophobic.
