The othering of gay audiences and queer readings.

  • What assumptions, messages and ideological values are constructed by placing 'gay' films separate from other films?
- This suggests that gay films should only be watched by gay people.
-This anchors the ideology that gay films aren't as good a blockbuster films.
- It assumes that straight people wouldn't be interested in gay films and cultivates the ideology that perhaps straight people shouldn't watch gay films as if they do then that makes them gay.

  • This section includes historical dramas, documentaries, comedies, romance films and hard hitting dramas. Why are all in the same section? What assumptions does this make about gay audiences?
- This assumes that gay people like dramatic and heart felt films conformingto the stereotype that gay people are soft and weak therefore can't 'take' action, horror and gore.
- These generes are all in the same section as typically if you like one comedies it suggests that youll then like romance and dramas. Sections almost help tell audeinces what they like to watch.
  • If I were to ask you "what is your favourite heterosexual film", how would you answer?
- I personally wouldn't know how to aswer this question as what defines a 'heterosexual' film? Does this mean if theres a gay couple for example in a comedy it makes the film gay? or is the film simply to represnting real life? This question definately confused me but then presents the argument why 'gay films' is a genre/label/section people put on films. If a film doesn't have any gay characters it doen't nessecarilty not represent perhaps queer people or include LQBTQ+ references so is the film a gay film or a heterosexual film?
  • How can we apply postcolonial theory to this display?-
- England is a christian country and made colonies in America, Australia and India in the 1700s (examples). England was a strict Christian country and was against homosexuality tothe point where it was punishable by death. America is the home of Hollywood and the ideology that being gay is wrong is still widely believed even though America is no longer infuenced by Englands rule. Because these belifes where embedded in American people for so long it's been intergrated in films and only recently has gay relationships been conveyed in films. This suggests why the 'gay'genre was made as from the 1700s in America being gay was wrong so it's still considered atypical for some people. Films with largely gay connotations is a new thing hence why gay films are sectioned from 'heterosexual' films.
  • Why do we arguably need LGBT sections?
- People with strict religious beliefs may not wish their children to watch LGBT content so having a section would appeal these people as they won't worry about potentially coming across something they dont agree with despite it being morally wrong.
- LGBT people may want the sections so they know there watching something that represents them perhaps without heavy stereotypes.
- Having LGBT sections on platforms such as Netflix conveys that they support the community and aren't homophobic.
