Explore how audiences can respond to and interpret the ideological perspectives of newspapers.
I am going to write about the different ideological perspectives audiences can interpret between the Daily Mirror and The Times.
The cover of the Daily Mirror was published after Donald Trump was elected as president. The stand-first on this cover reads " It's President Tump..." in capital letters and a bold red typeface. The red connotes anger and danger which indicates that this newspaper is clearly bias so will be against Trump. The lexis in the headline "What have they done?" indicates that its not the audiences 'fault' Trump has become president of America which anchors the audience to follow the producers beliefs. The main image of this cover is of the statue of Liberty crying, Roland Barthes theory of semiotic codes indicates that this is a proiretic code as it suggests action. This symbolises a loss of power and hope as The statue of Liberty represent freedom for America. The mise en scene of the setting -smoke and destroyed buildings- make intertextual references to movies such as Cloverfield and the Walking dead. Both these movies/Series are set in a post-apocalyptic future which symbolises the end of the world. The smoke also makes intertextual references to 911 terrorist attacks which were set in New York. This emphasises that having Trump as president will result in the End of the world.
The cover of The Times has a Headline of 'The New World'. The Lexis used creates a a sense of wonder and greatness and the word 'New' indicates that the world is better. The serif font also connotes positivity and seriousness which suggests Trump will be good for America. From this we can suggest this newspaper is Left winged. The lexis in the Pull quotes demonstrates Trumps ego but may also reflect other influential figures such as Martin Luther King. The mise en scene of the American flag is a symbolic code of freedom. This anchors the audience to believe that Trump is a positive force for America. The smug facial expression on Trumps face gives a polysemic reading as it furthermore represents Trumps ego which also, suggest a right winged reading.
