Buffy attitude article



  • In the episode 'becoming' Buffy comes out to her mother as a vampire slayer this could be an analogy of homosexual and queer people 'coming out' to their parents/peers. This is important as gay/queer people might idolise Buffy's character so to see a character 'come out' can give gay/queer audiences confidence as well as feel like they are being represented in the media.
  • The article includes a quote from the episode "if you walk out that door, dont ever come back" which many LGBTQ+ people would have experienced in their lives. To see Buffy walk out and except who she is would give hope to young LGBTQ+ kids to feel confident with their sexuality and to recognise that being gay or queer isn't wrong or strange.

  • Also this show was originally aired in the 90s before things like gay marriage was legal therefore it was important for gay/queer people to be represnted in a 'normal' way so LGBTQ+ audiences could feel inspired and positive about themselves. Also staright audiences could perhaps reject sterotypes accociated with gay people after watching the show which would be important for LGBTQ+ communities as at the time they were fighting for their rights.
